The Beetle (Type 1)
The Beetle design was first conceived in 1930's German although largely due to the political climate at the time the Beetles mass manufacture did not begin until the late 1940's, with the first Beetle being imported into the UK in 1953.
The Beetle continued in production until 1996 (in Mexico), during this time the Beetle underwent many alterations, although the general shape was kept largely intact. Different age and style Beetles are referred to as the following: Split Window, Oval Window, Super Beetle, 1302, 1303, GT Beetle, amongst numerous other names.
The Type 2 (Split Screen)
The Type 2 (also known as the transporter or bus) was introduced in 1950, based on the original type 1 design. The van was a big hit spawning numerous variations including Camper Vans aswell as specialist use as Ambulances, Fire Trucks etc. The Split Screen Type 2 remained in production until 1967.
The Type 2 (Bay Window)
The Bay Window Type 2 van was introduced in 1968, and remained in production in Germany until 1979. The van was then replaced by the 'wedge' shape T25.
